Hard Times

I wrote Hard Times for my wife Beth about one year ago while I was recording the Pilgrim EP. Alfred at Silvertone Studios had recently acquired a 1930′s RCA mic and I wanted to do a quick recording of it to give to Beth for Christmas. So at the end of a vocal session, with my voice pretty worn out, we did a live recording of it using the RCA mic. We later recorded the song for a video featuring cello, piano and some slide guitar which can be found on the same youtube account.

Hard Times was written all in one sitting from 11 PM to about 2 AM pretty much fully formed. Thats not how it usually works for me. Usually a song starts with a spark, gets developed and then widdled down to as fine a point as I can make it over months, sometimes years. I wish they all came as easily as this one.
Lyrics
7 years we were just beginning
After 21 a live’s been liven
You spent your best years on me
And all I can offer you is more
Hard Times
We didn’t know what we were gettin
The road was long the burden heavy
But you kept me close to your heart
And all I can offer you is more
Hard Times
You always seen the best in me
And all I can offer you is more
Hard Times
